i once met arthur miller
when rest for the weary came out
and it looked like I was going to get some play
I was invited to a party being thrown by john irving
there was a big pen meeting in nyc at the time
and all these bigdogs at the party, grass, atwood, barthelme, etc etc
and there I was standing there trying to act like i
belonged when this tall lean guy comes up to me
and says do I know you, you look familiar
I say arthur flowers and he says im an arthur too - arthur miller
mr cool blows it, ‘the arthur miller?' i say with wide eyed enthusiasm
he laughed, he was gracious about it
spent a little time trying to make me feel
at ease
ah the hopes and dreams of youth
like most middleaged folk i feel like
i havent lived up to my youthful potential
but hey the game aint over yet
that’s the way i feel about the demos electing dean
as their party chief, that’s exciting, kinda scary too
cause no telling what dean gon do but we know
hes gon do something and that he aint gon try to
be republican light and let bush doublespeak w/o
calling him on it
its showtime
in his acceptance speech he called the democrats the
party of fiscal responsibility and that its become clear that
"americans cannot trust republicans with their money."
said bushs social security plan would extract security from
and pile debt upon future generations
said the bush admin doesnt care about security, the demos were the ones
who pushed for the homeland security dept, pushed to make airlines safer
and demanded
reform of the intelligence community
all initiatives that bush resisted until
he saw the american people
would not let him avoid them
its all about who has control of the narrative and
in dean we got somebody who is not afraid to speak truth to the people
whereas its amazing how media has rolled over and played dead for bush
and whose going to speak truth about iraq
we have spent american lives and dollars
to bring about another wouldbe shiite theocracy
next door to bushs latest great satan - iran
what next in this farce
they gon tell us everything is alright and thats what
they planned all along
one piece of good piece of news is that
bush is having trouble selling his ownership society (and killing off social security)
he calls himself avoiding the painful details until hes sold the american people
on the necessity for killing social security but hes been having trouble
making it stick
no wonder with explanations like the one he gave in tampa recently:
"because the - all which is on the table begins to address the big cost drivers; for example, how benefits are calculate for example, is on the table, whether or not benefits rise based upon wage increases or price increases. theres a series of parts of the formula that are being considered. and when you couple that, those different cost drivers, affecting those - changing those with personal accounts, the idea is to get what has been promised like likely to be - or closer delivered to what has been promised. does that make any sense to you"
well, no actually it doesnt
thank god
okay im outta here
bush is working hard on his game
i got to work harder on mine
still trying to balance out the time investment on rootsblog
dont get the kind of response i got when i started it
seem to be declining rather than growing
like i never really found the groove for this thing
or maybe its just that i have stopped trying to please
anybody but myself
i think of these posts now like i think of my readings
whenever i give a presentation i always try to say something real
doesnt matter if anybody comes out or not
and when i do a post i feel like it should be essential
this one does not feel essential
i will refine it over the week and hope it starts singing
cause if its one thing i do not do
i do not abandon a literary project
i am a proud member of the line of o killens
and folk like arthur miller - the arthur miller
and this literary thing, i was taught that it is a sacred calling
and the only thing fatal in this business
is giving up
rickydoc signing out
and hanging tough
